I’m a bit surprised to see so many websites looking like blogs, with wide side margins, rather than using all this prime real estate and filling the entire page. I don’t mean that they should run text from one side to the other, or use up all available “white space” until the text is unreadable. But they could break the text into readable, interesting sections with headings.
So my question: Are those wide margins a trend? Or do you suppose that people just start using a template and don’t realize there can be so much more to it?
Thanks for your thoughts.

1Few reasons why. Margins are there to help with different screen/browser resolution. What may fill up on your browser, may make another browser scroll.
Another reason is that it makes it easier to read text. If you have text trailing the whole width, it looks long. People probably won’t read it and move on to a different site.
Thirdly, I’m not totally sure on this. It is just a trend. It’s what a lot of people like.
